Financial Support
The 4-Year NROTC scholarship covers the full cost of tuition at Illinois Institute of Technology or University of
Illinois at Chicago while also paying a monthly stipend for personal expenses. New as of 2021, students can choose to apply the 4-Year NROTC scholarship towards either Tuition or Room and Board (up to $11,500). For students attending the Illinois Institute of Technology, the university currently provides a free room and board scholarship to students with a NROTC scholarship. For those who have not yet received a NROTC Scholarship, Illinois residents that participate in NROTC at the University
of Illinois at Chicago (UIC) may be eligible to receive free tuition via the In-State tuition waver.
Additionally, students already in college can join NROTC and compete for a scholarship, up until the beginning of their junior year.
Career Options
The greatest benefit of being part of NROTC at Illinois Institute of Technology is the opportunity to be commissioned
as an officer in the United States Navy or Marine Corps. The naval career you choose will take you to different home
ports, training locations, and commands all over the world. You will be part of the greatest Naval fighting force in
the world.
Student Life
Our officer candidates, known as midshipmen, are full-time students at Illinois Institute of Technology or
University of Illinois at Chicago. They enjoy all the benefits and responsibilities of being college students but
with the added advantage of belonging to our organization. Many midshipmen hold leadership positions in on-campus
activities like Greek Life, sports, and clubs. The unit also frequently participates in community activities both
on campus and around Chicago.

The NROTC Scholarship program awards two, three, and four year scholarships for both Navy and Marine option
midshipmen through competitive national selection. Scholarships include full tuition, books, fees, and other
financial benefits. Additionally, IIT pays room and board fees for ROTC students. IIT also offers the NROTC Preparatory Program (NPP), More information about NPP at IIT can be found here.
At UIC, it is even possible to receive the In-State tuition
waiver for participating in the NROTC Program without a scholarship. Did you know you can still join NROTC without a scholarship? College students can join up until their Junior year and complete for a scholarship.

Midshipmen who graduate college and complete the NROTC program can be commissioned into either the Navy or Marine Corps. In the Navy, students will be commissioned as Unrestricted Line Officers.
Unrestricted Line Officers are qualified for command at sea, such as being the commanding officer of a
warship, becoming a Naval Aviator, or operating nuclear reactors on a submarine. Career options include Surface Warfare, Submarine, Aviation,
Special Operations, or Special Warfare.
NROTC is only one of several paths leading to commissioning as a Naval Officer. The United States Naval Academy and the Merchant Marine Academy are other options to earn your undergraduate degree and commissinom.

program, or the Civil Engineering Corps (CEC) collegiate program!
